Coveris Boosts UK Facility with Major Investments in Sustainable Packaging and Expanded Production
Coveris has announced a major investment in its polyethylene extrusion facility in Winsford, Cheshire, focusing on cutting-edge technology and expanded production capacity to meet the growing demand for sustainable and recyclable packaging solutions.
This strategic move enhances the site’s capabilities in developing technical barrier films and stretch films while furthering the company’s sustainability goals under its “No Waste” strategy.
One of the key upgrades is the installation of a nine-layer blown extrusion line, which positions Coveris as the UK’s largest producer of EVOH (ethylene vinyl alcohol) barrier films. These films are crucial for extending the shelf life of perishable foods like meat, poultry, cheese, and bakery products. The new line strengthens Coveris’ ability to meet market needs for recyclable films that maintain freshness and reduce food waste. The EVOH barrier technology is designed to provide an optimal balance of protection while being fully recyclable, supporting Coveris’ vision for a more sustainable packaging future.
Additionally, the site will introduce a new cast stretch extrusion line stated to begin production in December 2024. This line is particularly aimed at manufacturing films for heavy goods sectors, such as bottling, canning, and logistics. These stretch films will comply with the UK Plastic Packaging Tax, featuring a minimum of 30% recycled content, further underlining Coveris’ commitment to eco-friendly practices. The move is also part of the company’s broader initiative to develop products with reduced material usage and enhanced recyclability.
To support these technological advancements, Coveris is building a 5,000-pallet space warehouse, which will nearly triple its current storage capacity. This expansion, expected to be operational by the end of Q1 2025, will improve logistical efficiency, streamline supply chains, and reduce transportation emissions. It will also support the increased demand for products like MonoFlex Thermoform, a mono-material recyclable thermoforming solution.
The investments at the Winsford site reflect Coveris’ broader commitment to innovation in sustainable packaging solutions, reducing material waste, and advancing recycling technologies across its product range.
