Period products now wrapped in Paptic’s wood fibre-based material
Paptic is packaging feminine care products with its recyclable, wood fibre-based material, seeking to deliver a ‘soft and pleasant’ user experience while reducing flexible plastic waste.
Paptic materials are designed for efficient resource use and can be recycled alongside paper and cardboard. They comply with regulations like the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation and the Single-Use Plastics Directive, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional plastics.
According to the company, Paptic materials are lightweight, heat-sealable, and can be processed using existing plastic conversion equipment, enabling manufacturers to switch from plastic without additional investment.
Customers can also choose FSC-certified options, demonstrating Paptic’s commitment to responsible sourcing.
“We’ve developed a material that not only improves sustainability but also enhances functionality,” says Alexandros Skouras, Hygiene Segment Director at Paptic. “This solution replaces conventional plastics, offering a renewable and recyclable alternative. It’s ideal for personal care products, where comfort is a priority.
“Our R&D efforts focus on developing recyclable, wood fibre-based materials to help our customers reduce plastic use, while optimising resources and enhancing circularity, keeping materials in use for as many life cycles as possible.”
The collection rate for fibre-based packaging materials is already above 84%, with all the fibres reused as raw materials for new solutions. Paptic aims to expand into the hygiene and feminine care markets, offering a high-performance packaging alternative and reducing plastic waste.
Similar efforts in the feminine care industry include Procter & Gamble’s transition to FSC-certified, recyclable paper-based packaging for its Always Cotton Protection Pad Range in March 2023. An ISO Life Cycle Assessment found that this packaging reduced greenhouse gas emissions by over 60% compared to virgin fossil plastic bags in Europe.
Recently, ProAmpac announced the commercialization of its fibre-based ProActive Recyclable RP-1050 as overwrap for feminine care products and other uses. This kerbside-recyclable solution will be available in natural kraft and bleached options, with flexographic printing enhancing brand visibility and customer engagement.
Searo Labs is also exploring seaweed-based packaging for feminine care products and has partnered with PA Consulting to scale up and commercialise this technology, addressing PFAS usage and plastic pollution.
In other news, Paptic has been nominated for a Sustainability Award in the Commercialised Renewable Materials category, recognising the application of its materials to surface-sensitive products.
