Heinz Tomato Ketchup unveils fully recyclable squeeze bottle

Heinz have taken a courageous step toward the future of packaging, they have launched a brand new 100% recyclable “first-of-its-kind cap”, Heinz are planning to make all its packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025.

Heinz asserts the cap plays a part in its goal to reduce the company’s use of virgin plastic by 20% by 2030. This change from Heinz has attracted the support of charity organisation WRAP (A charity dedicated to ending climate change).

“While prevention or elimination of packaging is the first instance would be the ideal scenario, packaging plays an important, practical and convenient role. Therefore, the next stop is to ensure as much of it is recyclable, reusable or compostable as possible,” says Adam Herriott, senior sector specialist at WRAP.

Same bottle, new cap

In the past Heinz caps have been manufactured using multiple materials, therefore making it challenging to recycle. Heinz have tackled this problem through using a single, rigid material therefore allowing the cap to be 100% recyclable, while providing the same servings of ketchup meaning it will not change the practical use of the bottle. Other studies by Heinz suggest the new cap should actually make it easier to squeeze out the sauce when the bottle is nearly empty.

Focus on the future.

The modern-day world is all about sustainability and reducing climate change, this is why the president of Heinz Northern Europe has explained that the new cap is in line with UK Plastic Pact regulations.

“Through the UK Plastic Pact, our members have made some groundbreaking changes and introduced innovations to ensure we are reusing, recycling, refilling and composting as much as possible. A lot of work is still to be done to ensure we reach our targets and have circularity regarding this material,” explains de Noronha.
