McDonald’s biggest independent franchisee introduces biodegradable food packaging in Argentina

In a landmark move for the fast-food sector, Arcos Dorados Holdings, McDonald’s largest independent franchisee, has launched biodegradable food packaging in Argentina. This innovative packaging uses Janus technology by J&J Green Paper, incorporating a 100% biodegradable barrier compound. The natural coating forms a protective barrier against grease, water, and oxygen, suitable for various packaging items such as wrappers, boxes, cups, utensils, K-cups, and straws. Fully biodegradable, compostable, repulpable, and recyclable, Janus offers a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based coatings and harmful PFAS chemicals.

This initiative comes amidst tightening regulations on PFAS, known as “forever chemicals,” due to their environmental and health risks. Regulatory changes in states like California and New York have banned PFAS in food packaging, pushing the industry towards safer alternatives. Rick Bulman, CEO of J&J Green Paper, highlighted the critical role of Janus technology in eliminating toxic materials from the food and beverage industry, aiming for a healthier, sustainable future.

Moreover, McDonald’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond packaging innovations. The company recently joined The Recycling Partnership’s Polypropylene Recycling Coalition, contributing a multi-million-dollar grant to enhance recycling infrastructure. This funding supports the implementation of advanced sortation technologies at recycling facilities, ensuring polypropylene is effectively recycled and kept out of landfills.

Arcos Dorados’ adoption of Janus technology represents a significant step in the fast-food industry’s journey towards environmental responsibility.
