Lichfield supermarket Lidl is set to trial new technology aimed at reducing plastic use by offering shoppers the chance to refill their laundry detergent on the shelf. Developed by sustainability firm Algramo, in partnership with Swiss Pack Europe (manufacturer of spout pouch), the digital refill machine will introduce ‘smart’ reusable pouches for Formil washing products. Customers can refill without opening a specially-designed cap and receive a 20p discount. Mark Newbold of Lidl expressed pride in the innovation, emphasizing the alignment of cost savings with environmental responsibility. The trial aims to quantify the packaging saved. Chris Baker of Algramo highlighted the commitment to reducing single-use plastic waste and lowering product costs through bulk sales. This initiative represents a significant step in optimizing refill options for consumers and retailers alike, with potential for further evolution in the future.
